Ma – Cry of Silence
Buy ticketsFemale collective resistance in Myanmar takes center stage in this powerful drama about struggle, solidarity, and justice, inspired by real events.
Inspired by real strikes in Myanmar in 2012, the drama follows 18-year-old Mi-thet's journey from the countryside to the city's textile factories. Alongside her, a stream of young people seek a better future, escaping the villages that the Myanmar regime and military are brutally burning down to prevent alleged uprisings. In the factory, the women are treated like cattle, and the foreman punishes them with blows from a ruler. Unfulfilled promises of contractually agreed wages are rampant but never fulfilled, yet when strikes break out, Mi-thet is initially hesitant. Joining is not risk-free for anyone. Ma is a powerful, multi-award-winning debut that brings us incredibly close to the vulnerable women."
