It was to Paris that the American James Baldwin arrived in November 1948 with 40 dollars in his pocket. He was 24 years old, hoping to finish his first novel, “Go Tell It on the Mountain”. In the City of Light, he could be himself and escape the oppressive racism and homophobia of the United States. Here, one of the 20th century's most influential authors would be shaped, and spend much of his adult life. In his weightless, black-and-white debut film, Yashaddai Owens depicts Baldwin's (Benny O. Arthur) wordless experiences of newfound individuality, sexual liberation, and the undefined rhythm of Paris. The result evokes a sense of wonder and freedom, like a jazz piece by John Coltrane.
