An award-winning, sophisticated debut film about longing, and belonging on a Cape Verdean volcanic island and in the heart of a young girl.
Hanami is an aesthetically and philosophically layered coming-of-age story about Nana, a parentless girl. She is surrounded by a community of women - not as a substitute for a mother, but a natural premise, as intrinsic as the existential loneliness that shapes her life. As others leave the island for greener pastures, Nana becomes an accidental, yet not unwilling link to the past and a symbol of continuity in a world of impermanence. Through Nana, the dream of home is kept alive, while her fever spells - an inheritance from the mother she never knew - and the simmering volcano suggest a life force growing beneath the calm surface.
