Sahlgrenska Hospital, Majorna, and archival police footage bring old Gothenburg to life once again in the festival’s most beloved recurring program.
In 1939, the doors opened to the new Central Laundry on the Sahlgrenska site, where hundreds of employees managed laundry from all the city’s hospitals. The film compares working conditions in the old laundry with the assembly line principles of the new facility. Additional highlights include prisoner exchanges during World War II and the burial of victims from the S/S Westfalen in 1944. The program concludes with newsreel clips and a city film from 1973. The screening is presented in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg, the National Archives in Gothenburg, the Medical History Museum in Gothenburg, the Royal Library, and the Swedish Film Institute.
