Golden Land
Buy ticketsFinnish family returns to Somaliland to dig for riches on inherited land in a finely polished documentary about entrepreneurial dreams, cultural clashes, and how it really is to sit on a gold mine.
When Finnish–Somali Mustafe finds out that his family’s land is full of copper and gold, he decides to leave his safe family life in the north and move to Somaliland. But starting a mining company on the Horn of Africa turns out to be more difficult than Mustafe had imaged. While he gets lost in clan feuds and bureaucracy to retrieve his new riches from the ground, his children fight to find a place in their new home, where everything is so unlike what they grew up with in Finland. Golden Land is a heart-warming portrait of a family who, despite simmering racism, has built their life in Finland, but leaves everything behind to cultivate their own land and manage their family’s riches before they fall into the claws of big global players.
