Buy ticketsEmotionally tempestuous drama and exact personal portraits in Lukas Dhont’s Cannes-awarded masterpiece about the shattering of the relationship between two teenage boys.
During the magical summers of childhood, Léo and Rémi play in the Belgian countryside. They run after each other among meadow flowers, draw pictures of each other, and play war against enemies that only exist in their imaginations. Their friendship runs deep, intimate, and physically free-and-easy. But in the fall, middle school begins, and their classmates notice how they lean their heads against each other’s shoulders. Soon the question that changes everything arises: “Are you two together?” With inmost empathy and perfectly in attuned, Lukas Dhont, who broke through just a few years ago with the acclaimed debut Girl, presents a relentless and quiet explosion that that rips the boys apart and brings their world crashing down. Close is Belgium’s Oscar’s contribution and was awarded by the jury in conjunction with its world premiere at Cannes.
