Directors Talk: Dea Kulumbegashvili

Dea Kulumbegashvili is Georgia's most acclaimed contemporary filmmaker. Her breakthrough came with her feature film debut Beginning (GFF 2021), an evocative and formally refined drama about faith, identity and female resistance, awarded the Golden Shell for Best Film in San Sebastián. Now she is back with April, winner of the Special Jury Prize in Venice, an uncompromising confrontation with patriarchal structures in which a female doctor defends the right to abortion and challenges societal norms. Kulumbegashvili is also visiting Gothenburg as the jury chair for the Ingmar Bergman Competition.
