The Krahô people resist exploitation and assimilation in a unique, Cannes-winning docudrama that doubles as a magnificent journey through the rainforest.

In the making of The Buriti Flower, directors João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora spent over 15 months with the indigenous Krahô people in four different villages in the Brazilian Amazon, shaping the film in dialogue with the community. Three amateur actors perform in mostly documentary contexts, and the film follows a non-linear logic inspired by the oral storytelling traditions of the Krahô people. With multiple layers of time and magically beautiful images of the forests, the narrative moves between historical abuses and the ongoing struggle for identity, empowerment, and freedom. The most outspoken voice is that of the feminist mother Patpro Krahô (also one of the scriptwriters), who aims to travel to the capital to protest against Bolsonaro's aggressive policies.
