The death of a Dutch plantation owner and his surprising will becomes the catalyst for violent events in a visually stunning and searing colonial satire.

When Jan drops dead after a nighttime visit to his native mistress and servant, it turns everything upside down. His wife Agathe refuses to acknowledge that colonial rule is also on the brink of collapse and summons their unsympathetic son and his heavily pregnant wife from Europe to take over the management of the plantation and sugar factory. The couple detests the idea of spending even a minute too long in the tropical climate, and when it becomes apparent that Jan has bequeathed the estate to his illegitimate son, a cat-and-mouse game begins among the sugar beets. Ena Sendijarevic delivers a confidently stylized satirical drama reminiscent of Triangle of Sadness with its reversed hierarchies. The Netherlands' Oscar submission.
