Danny Boyle's impressive directorial debut is a dark comedy about three friends who involuntarily become entangled in an escalating spiral of violence.

Three young adults share an apartment in Edinburgh. They are about to get a new roommate, but the man they sublet to dies of an overdose on the first night. When the trio discovers a bag full of money with the deceased, their lives change dramatically, and they are drawn into a fateful sequence filled with moral dilemmas. Shallow Grave marks the beginning of the collaboration between Danny Boyle, Ewan McGregor, and screenwriter John Hodge. Some of the characters actually reappear in Trainspotting two years later, sparking discussions about whether Shallow Grave should be seen as a continuation of this narrative.
