Agnieszka Holland portrays the migrant crisis at the EU's eastern border in a contemporary masterpiece that won awards in Venice and has created political chaos in Poland.

In the summer of 2021, Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko orchestrated a refugee crisis to retaliate against the EU. With promises of an easy passage to the union, he welcomed refugees from the Middle East and Africa, sending them towards the Polish border where they were met by tough border police. In this year's perhaps most urgent film, Agnieszka Holland depicts life at "the green border". She turns the camera towards a Syrian refugee family aiming for Sweden, a newly minted human rights activist, and a skeptical border guard. In a heated debate, Polish government officials have criticized the film for lacking nationalism, but more than anything, Green Border is a powerful cinematic fresco of contemporary Europe.
