Mohamed Kordofani's acclaimed debut is a down-to-earth and delicately told story of two lives interwoven and torn apart alongside Sudan's dissolution.

When Julia and Mona meet, for reasons that Mona does everything to conceal, a strong bond is quickly formed between them. Julia, originally from southern Sudan, leads a vulnerable life as a single mother of a son after her husband's disappearance. Mona, a wealthy Muslim from the north, enjoys a more secure existence, but with a fragile marriage and suppressed desires, she too lives a restricted life. As they grow closer, a new sense of freedom awakens in both of them. At the same time, tensions in the country escalate, and as the inevitable national breakdown approaches so does the moment of truth for Mona and Julia.
