Buy ticketsA love-thirsty war interpreter with insomnia initiates a search for intimacy with the help of fortune cookies in a wistful indie gem with traces of Jarmusch and Kaurismäki.
Donya is an emotionally distant former translator for the US Army in Afghanistan, now living a routine life in Fremont, California. Drained of life, she works at a factory for Chinese fortune cookies while being haunted by the escape from the Taliban-controlled homeland where her family still resides. When Donya realizes that life is slipping through her fingers, she decides to send out a love-seeking message in one of the fortune cookies. In Babak Jalali's (Radio Dreams, GFF 2017) magnetically subdued drama, dry deadpan humor mixes with dreamy jazz and culminates in one of the year's most human films, with Hollywood's new favorite hunk Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) in a memorable supporting role.
